Siaya Governor James Orengo has reiterated his concerns about the Government’s delay in implementing the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) report, warning that failure to do so could lead to nationwide protests. Orengo, speaking during a meeting with ODM delegates in his county, expressed his disappointment at the prolonged delay in the implementation of the report, stating that it could potentially spark protests similar to those witnessed in the previous year.

The Governor also raised suspicions that the Kenya Kwanza faction was deliberately sabotaging the implementation of the report, which aims to address the long-standing issues affecting the country. He urged the parties involved in the NADCO negotiations, including Kalonzo Musyoka, Kimani Ichung’wah, and Opiyo Wandayi, to adhere to the agreed timelines and implement the report promptly.

In addition to his concerns about the NADCO report, Orengo criticized ODM leaders who were already speculating about succession plans following Raila Odinga’s exit from politics. He emphasized Raila’s pivotal role within the ODM party and warned against premature discussions about his successor, highlighting the importance of maintaining party unity.

Among the ODM leaders positioning themselves to succeed Raila are former Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho and former Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya, who are eyeing the Presidency in 2027. This comes after Raila expressed interest in the African Union Commission chairperson position, signaling his potential exit from Kenyan politics.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua recently announced his full endorsement of the NADCO report, after initially harboring reservations. In a media briefing at his office, Gachagua revealed his support for the report and dismissed rumors of a potential handshake between President William Ruto and Raila Odinga. He explained that he only agreed to support the report after learning that key Mt Kenya leaders, including Kimani Ichung’wah and Cecily Mbarire, would be involved in the negotiations.

The bipartisan nature of the NADCO talks was highlighted by Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka and co-chair Kimani Ichung’wah, who showcased the recommendations stemming from the negotiations. The commitment of both leaders to finding lasting solutions to Kenya’s challenges was evident in their collaborative efforts.

Overall, the urgency of implementing the NADCO report was underscored by Governor Orengo, who emphasized the need for timely action to avoid a recurrence of past protests and political instability. The unity and cooperation of all parties involved in the negotiations will be crucial in realizing the long-term goals outlined in the report.
