The Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua, made a heartwarming announcement on Thursday, April 4, where he pledged to sponsor ten students from Pwani University to help them complete their studies. This gesture was described by the Deputy President as a way of remembrance of his visit to the university. He mentioned that he would personally cover the school fees for these ten students who are in dire need of financial assistance. The initiative was to be carried out through the Rigathi Gachagua Foundation, an organization run by the Deputy President.
In addition to this pledge, the Deputy President also talked about significant changes in the funding models of universities in Kenya. These changes were aimed at facilitating more students to access and complete their education within the country. The new funding model introduced guidelines for full, partial, and loan financing based on the financial background of each student. This marked a departure from the previous funding system that provided a standard rate for all students receiving financial support.
Furthermore, the Deputy President assured that the new model would be continuously developed to incorporate feedback from Kenyan students. He expressed openness to receiving input from student leaders, stating that mechanisms would be put in place to listen to their ideas for improvement. During the event, the Principal Secretary for Higher Education and Research, Dr. Beatrice Inyangala, highlighted that stakeholders had already provided feedback which had been incorporated into the model. She emphasized that students would also have the opportunity to give their feedback to ensure that the model meets the diverse needs of all students.
In a separate engagement, Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria took on the responsibility of supporting three grandchildren of the lady known for her role in the hustler campaign as Mama Mboga. CS Kuria made a commitment to assist the students throughout their educational journey and help them secure future employment opportunities. This act of generosity was praised and appreciated by those in attendance.
As a parting thought, it is evident that both the Deputy President and the Cabinet Secretary have demonstrated their dedication to supporting education and empowering students in Kenya by providing financial assistance and mentorship opportunities. Their actions serve as a beacon of hope for those in need of support to access quality education and secure a brighter future for themselves.
