A brewing storm within the Kenya Kwanza Coalition has sparked demands for the removal of Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha. The call for her dismissal was made by Njoroge Wainana, the MP of Kieni Constituency, during a graduation ceremony at Kieni Technical Training Centre. Wainana urged President William Ruto to replace Nakhumicha, citing popular public opinion that she has failed to effectively fulfill her duties.

Speaking at the event, Wainana emphasized the need for a more competent individual to lead the Ministry of Health and urged the President to reassign Nakhumicha to another ministry where she might fit better. He expressed concerns that Nakhumicha may not have the capability to navigate the country through a health crisis like the COVID-19 pandemic if it were to occur.

The MP’s stance aligns with Embakasi Member of Parliament Babu Owino, who filed an impeachment motion in Parliament seeking Nakhumicha’s removal. However, the fate of the CS’s position is yet to be decided as the motion has not been debated in parliament.

Adding to the pressure on Nakhumicha, former Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya criticized her absence from office during a funeral service, indicating that she should have been addressing important matters within the Ministry of Health. Despite the mounting criticisms, Nakhumicha has remained steadfast in her position, refusing to resign. She attributes the increased scrutiny to political enemies she claims are operating as cartels within the Ministry of Health.

Nakhumicha’s resilience was evident during the handover of Mama Margaret Kenyatta Level 5 Hospital to Nairobi County on March 25, where she reiterated her commitment to serving the public. The tensions surrounding her leadership have created a divided opinion within the political landscape, with some advocating for her removal and others standing by her side.

The ongoing saga involving Nakhumicha highlights the complexities of leadership in a critical sector like healthcare, where decisions made by officials can have significant impacts on public welfare. As the debate unfolds, the future of the Ministry of Health remains uncertain, with calls for a more capable leader to steer the country through potential health crises. The ultimate decision lies in the hands of the appointing authority, who must navigate the delicate balance between political considerations and public health priorities.
