President William Ruto has, for the first time, spoken out about claims that foreigners are getting Kenyan identity cards after abolishing the long-standing vetting processes for Kenyan citizens living near borders.

Speaking during the 2026 Madaraka Day celebrations in Wajir on Monday, June 1, the Head of State defended a declaration he signed in February 2025, saying the declaration was aimed at easing the registration and issuance of identity cards and birth certificates in Northern Kenya
