Wellwishers rallied together on Friday to raise over Ksh280,000 in support of Grace Laws, a United States-based teenager who is aiming to travel to Nairobi, Kenya for a volunteering mission. Grace set up a GoFundMe page with the goal of collecting a total of Ksh600,000 to cover her travel and living expenses for the trip.

As a pre-med student majoring in Biology with a minor in Chemistry at Citadel Military College of South Carolina, Grace recognized the immense value of accumulating over 160 hours of volunteering work as part of a medical camp team in Nairobi. This experience would not only enhance her academic journey but also provide her with unique practical insights that are hard to come by for undergraduate students in the United States.

Having already secured a spot on the medical camp team in Nairobi, Grace emphasized the significance of financial support to help her fulfill this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. She shared on her GoFundMe page that the application process for the trip was rigorous, with the college carefully considering various aspects of her candidacy. Service and experience are highly regarded qualities in medical school applications, making this volunteering mission a valuable addition to her resume.

Looking ahead, Grace plans to graduate in 2025 and pursue a career in the medical sector within the Army, aiming to become a flight surgeon in the Medical Corps. Her dedication to serving others and embarking on charitable initiatives is a testament to her commitment to making a positive impact in the world.

In a similar spirit of giving back, ten students from St Paul’s College in Dublin, Ireland recently received Ksh1 million for a volunteering mission in Kenya. Their mission aims to contribute to local communities, including areas like Kamulu in Nairobi, with a focus on making a meaningful difference and fostering positive change.

The collective efforts of individuals like Grace Laws and the students from St Paul’s College highlight the power of altruism and community support in driving social impact and creating opportunities for individuals to engage in meaningful volunteer work. By coming together to support such initiatives, we not only uplift those in need but also foster a culture of compassion and generosity that transcends borders and inspires others to make a difference in the world.
