An eyewitness has shared the harrowing experience of locals who tried to rescue victims of a tragic chopper crash that resulted in the death of General Francis Ogolla and nine other military officials. Bernard Kipkorir recounted the events to a local media station, detailing how the community sprang into action on Thursday, April 18.

According to Kipkorir, the afternoon was marked by several flight activities in the area. However, everything changed minutes past 2 pm when a deafening bang echoed through the surroundings, prompting residents to investigate the source of the noise. Some brave individuals rushed to the scene and joined in the rescue efforts for the crash victims.

Three survivors were discovered amidst the wreckage, and immediate medical attention was provided before they were airlifted to a nearby mission hospital for further treatment. Kipkorir described the chaotic scene and the collective effort to save those onboard the aircraft. He emphasized the urgency of the situation and the quick response from the community to assist in the rescue mission.

Meanwhile, West Pokot County Commissioner Abdulahi Khalif revealed that the area was cordoned off following confirmation that the chopper involved belonged to the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF). KDF officials utilized a drone to survey the crash site and assess the situation, including the possibility of bandit involvement in the incident.

General Ogolla had been in the region to inspect the reconstruction of schools that had been closed due to bandit attacks. While the exact cause of the crash remains unclear, a team of experts from the Kenya Airforce has been tasked with investigating the circumstances leading to the tragic accident.

The bodies of the deceased were transported to Nairobi on the same day of the crash, and President William Ruto declared a three-day mourning period to honor the fallen KDF officers. The nation mourned the loss of General Ogolla and his colleagues, recognizing their sacrifice and service to the country.

As investigations continue into the crash, the community and authorities are grappling with the aftermath of the tragic event. The bravery and solidarity displayed by the locals in the rescue efforts serve as a testament to the resilience and compassion of the human spirit in times of crisis. The memory of General Francis Ogolla and the other military officials will be cherished as heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
