The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) commended Samburu’s Officer Commanding Station (OCS) Andrew Nyabicha for his commendable act of integrity in rejecting a Ksh80,000 bribe offered to him by three individuals. The incident involved a well-organized scheme where the driver of the OCS was part of a plan to offer the bribe in exchange for the release of a suspect who had robbed three foreign nationals he had smuggled into the country.

Instead of succumbing to the temptation of the bribe, Nyabicha chose to uphold ethical standards and promptly reported the matter to EACC officers, who immediately took action. EACC spokesperson Eric Ngumbi praised Nyabicha for his courageous stand against corruption and highlighted the importance of such actions in protecting national security and ensuring the rule of law.

Ngumbi emphasized the significance of police commanders across the country taking a proactive stance in eradicating corruption from police operations, as it can jeopardize security and hinder access to justice. The suspect, for whom the bribe was intended to secure a release, had been apprehended for robbing and trafficking three Ethiopian nationals, with stolen items and forged documents found in his possession exposing his criminal activities.

In a similar incident from November the previous year, a police officer received accolades from EACC for turning down a Ksh1.7 million bribe offer. The officer had been approached by individuals attempting to bribe her to influence investigations into fraudulent activities at the Port of Mombasa. EACC commended the officer for her ethical stand, emphasizing that such integrity is expected of all public officers when faced with moral dilemmas.

Moreover, EACC took decisive action by arresting the suspects involved in the bribery attempt, who were later arraigned in the Mombasa law courts to face charges related to bribery allegations. The commission reiterated the importance of upholding ethical standards and combatting corruption in all sectors, including law enforcement, to uphold the integrity of public service.

Overall, the incidents involving Nyabicha and the female police officer serve as shining examples of ethical leadership and integrity in the face of corruption. EACC continues to advocate for a zero-tolerance approach to corruption and emphasizes the role of public officers in upholding the rule of law and safeguarding national security. Such actions not only uphold the principles of good governance but also contribute to a safer and more just society for all citizens.
