On a Saturday evening, a disturbing incident occurred on Thika Road along Lumumba Drive in Nairobi County. A driver, operating a white SUV, hit a pedestrian and callously fled the scene, leaving the victim injured. The pedestrian was later identified as the daughter of Kirinyaga Member of the County Assembly (MCA), prompting an urgent plea from the MCA for assistance in locating the reckless driver.

MCA Njeri Mwaniki expressed her shock and distress over the hit-and-run incident that almost claimed her daughter’s life. She called on the police and the public to assist in identifying and apprehending the driver responsible for the heinous act. Despite the driver’s attempt to evade justice by going into hiding, MCA Mwaniki vowed that the law would eventually catch up with the perpetrator.

In a public statement, MCA Mwaniki sternly warned the driver, stating, “You knocked down my daughter, almost killing her. You will face the consequences of the law in this country. If you are wise, reveal yourself before facing the full force of the law.” She also requested prayers from the community while expressing gratitude for her daughter’s ongoing recovery.

Fortunately, a good Samaritan named Dennis was present at the scene of the accident and rendered crucial aid to the victim. Dennis was able to identify the fleeing vehicle and swiftly transported the injured young lady to the hospital for medical attention. The timely intervention of Dennis likely played a pivotal role in saving the victim’s life.

This distressing incident is just one example of the escalating trend of careless driving in the country, leading to a surge in preventable fatalities. The National Transport Safety Authority (NTSA) reported a concerning increase in road accidents between January 1, 2024, and April 1, 2024, compared to the same period in the previous year. During this timeframe, 7,198 Kenyans were involved in road accidents, marking a significant uptick of 1,908 cases from the corresponding period in 2023.

The NTSA has been conducting rigorous safety compliance checks to address the alarming rise in road accidents. Recent operations, such as the road checks along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway and safety compliance checks at Kariene, Meru/Nkubu Road, serve as crucial measures to enhance road safety and curb reckless driving practices that endanger the lives of motorists and pedestrians.

As the community rallies together to support the victim and advocate for road safety, it is imperative for all road users to exercise caution, respect traffic regulations, and prioritize safety on the roads. Collaboration between authorities, motorists, and pedestrians is essential to foster a culture of responsible driving and prevent tragic incidents like the hit-and-run on Thika Road from reoccurring. Together, we can make our roads safer and protect the lives of all who travel on them.
