Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua made an announcement on Tuesday regarding the government’s plans to introduce reforms aimed at improving the overall welfare of officers working with the National Police Service (NPS). His statement came after visiting Juja OCS Alex Misoi, who was recuperating at Avenue Hospital following an attack by unknown assailants on Monday. Gachagua indicated that the reforms would be implemented starting July 1.
One of the key promises made by the Deputy President was to ensure that officers injured in the line of duty would receive insurance coverage. Additionally, he assured that plans were underway to provide support for the families of officers who put their lives at risk while on duty.
“We have reforms that will be implemented from July, and we are even looking at the issues of insurance for officers injured in the line of duty, and to ensure officers risking their lives have their families protected,” Gachagua stated.
Expressing concern over the recent attacks on officers and police stations, Gachagua vowed to expedite the implementation of the reforms. He directed police commanders to take decisive action against individuals who target police officers and raid police stations.
“The people need to know that you cannot attack police officers, and we will not allow it,” he emphasized. “Commander, you must move swiftly, and clean up that village because this impunity is of the highest order and not acceptable.”
In response to the attack on the OCS, the police commander in charge reported that 52 individuals linked to the incident had been apprehended and presented in court on Tuesday. He also mentioned that a round-up operation had been conducted overnight to make the arrests and that such efforts would be sustained.
The OCS, John Misoi, was injured on April 1 when an assailant aimed an arrow at him in the Gachochoro area of Kiambu County during a raid on an illicit brew den. He was initially taken to Thika Level Five Hospital and later transferred to a private health facility for surgery. The surgeon overseeing his treatment confirmed that the surgery was successful, and the officer was in stable condition.
The government’s commitment to enhancing the welfare of police officers and ensuring their safety in the line of duty reflects a significant step towards improving the overall effectiveness and morale within the National Police Service. Through these reforms, officers can be assured of better protection and support, both for themselves and their families, as they carry out their crucial roles in safeguarding the community.
