Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua responded to President William Ruto’s plans to have women as running mates for United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidates in future elections. Gachagua made his remarks during the International Women’s Day celebrations in Embu on Friday, March 8, 2024. He confirmed that discussions had taken place regarding the inclusion of women in leadership positions within the National Government, with bigger roles. However, Gachagua clarified that the implementation of this plan would occur after the current terms have concluded.

“It’s true the president and I talked about including women in leadership roles in the National Government, with better roles,” Gachagua stated. He further cleared the air on speculations that the plans were to take effect immediately, emphasizing the need to take time before implementing decisions of such magnitude.

“Some of you thought that it’s now, no, you have to wait. I first help the president in this term, and then at the end, he will himself guide us on how to include the women,” Gachagua stated.

In addressing gender equality issues, Gachagua praised President William Ruto’s efforts in advocating for women’s rights by supporting the two-thirds gender rule proposed in the NADCO report. He commended Ruto for consistently questioning the absence of women in various plans and initiatives.

President William Ruto, speaking at the same event, reiterated his commitment to supporting women by appointing 16 women to ambassadorial roles to represent Kenya internationally. He also mentioned that he had written a notice to the national assembly to consider amending the law to create more leadership opportunities for women in the government.

“We have decided as a party and as a government that the national assembly through the parliamentary group and all the structures that we have will make sure we pass the matter,” Ruto stated.

Apart from his support for women, Ruto promised to eliminate the collateral requirement when borrowing from the Women Enterprise Fund, lower the interest rate to six per cent, and increase the fund to serve more women. This initiative aims to empower women economically and provide them with greater access to financial resources.

In conclusion, both Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and President William Ruto have expressed their commitment to promoting gender equality and empowering women in leadership roles. Their efforts to include women in key positions within the National Government and provide greater support through initiatives like the Women Enterprise Fund showcase a dedication to advancing women’s rights and opportunities in Kenya.
