Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua made a significant announcement on Saturday concerning the transfer of police officers found guilty of misconduct. Speaking at the funeral of over 13 people who were victims of illicit brew in Kirinyaga, Gachagua revealed that the government, under the leadership of President William Ruto, had taken a firm stance on the issue of rogue cops. He emphasized that the government would no longer allow the transfer of problematic police officers from one county to another, as it merely shifts the problem instead of solving it.
Gachagua expressed the government’s commitment to immediate interdictions for police officers who fail to fulfill their duties. He stressed that the administration, in collaboration with President Ruto, had agreed that transferring non-performing officers was counterproductive to the goal of maintaining law and order in all parts of Kenya. Instead, the government would implement strict measures to effectively deal with officers found guilty of colluding with traders in the illegal sale of alcohol.
Furthermore, Gachagua emphasized that no police officer, regardless of their rank, would be exempt from the government’s crackdown on rogue behavior. He highlighted the negative impact of transferring corrupt officers to different counties, stating that it only perpetuates the same problems in new locations. In addition to addressing the issue of rogue officers, Gachagua raised concerns about some police officers who were found to be running bars. He stressed that this presented a conflict of interest, especially in light of the government’s efforts to combat drug addiction and the sale of illicit alcohol. Consequently, he announced that such officers would have to choose between resigning from the service or giving up their business ventures. Gachagua also urged members of the National Assembly and MCAs to submit the names of officers running bars to his office for appropriate action.
The Deputy President also called on the Judiciary to cooperate in addressing the sale of illicit alcohol and refrain from issuing conservatory orders for such cases.
