The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has provided new information regarding the case involving two officers from the Kasarani Police Station, which came to light in a viral social media video. The video captured the complainant accusing the officers of scamming her out of Ksh50,000 while she was attempting to recover Ksh300,000 that she had lost in a mobile money transfer.

The incident began while the complainant was in Saudi Arabia and sent Ksh413,000 to her sister in Kenya. The sister deposited the money in a bank and was informed that the transaction would take three days to process. However, when the complainant’s sister discovered that she had not received the money, it was revealed that the funds had been mistakenly deposited into a different mobile subscriber’s account.

Despite attempts by the bank to reverse the transaction, only Ksh171,000 was recovered, with the remaining Ksh242,000 already withdrawn by the unintended recipient. To address the issue, the woman traveled to Kenya, reported the matter at the Kasarani Police Station, and was subsequently directed to the DCI Kasarani for further assistance.

Two detectives were assigned to the case and launched investigations under the Computer Misuse and Cyber Crime Act. The suspect who had received the money was traced to the Bande area at the Kenya-Tanzania border during the Christmas period in 2023. Following his arrest and subsequent release on bail, the suspect was apprehended again on February 20, 2024, and taken to court. He was charged and granted bail, with the case scheduled for mention and hearing on specific dates in 2024.

Regarding the accused officers implicated in the bribery allegations, the DCI stated that an investigation into their conduct would be conducted despite the case being before the court. The institution assured that appropriate action would be taken based on the findings of the investigation.

In summary, the DCI’s proactive response to the viral video and subsequent investigation into the matter demonstrates a commitment to upholding integrity within the police force and ensuring that justice is served. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of accountability and transparency in law enforcement to maintain public trust and confidence in the justice system.
