The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officers in Mombasa made a significant arrest on Wednesday, apprehending a suspected drug trafficker found in possession of heroin and bhang. Acting on a tip-off from vigilant members of the public, the detectives conducted a raid at the suspect’s residence, leading to the discovery of sachets of heroin and rolls of cannabis sativa. The team also seized a substantial amount of cash totalling Ksh52,750, including some in US dollars.

Additionally, the DCI officers impounded the suspect’s vehicle, believed to have been obtained through illicit means. The agency confirmed, “Also seized from the suspect is his vehicle, which is believed to be proceeds of crime, along with cash amounting to Sh26,250 and USD 200 (equivalent to Ksh26,500).” Various drug paraphernalia, such as packaging envelopes indicating involvement in the drug syndicate, were also confiscated during the operation.

Moreover, three mobile phones were taken as evidence, suspected to hold valuable information that could lead to the identification of the suspect’s accomplices and assist in further investigations. The suspect is scheduled to appear in court on April 18 to face charges related to drug trafficking.

This arrest follows a crackdown by law enforcement authorities at the Kenyan Coast aimed at eliminating drug dealers in the region. In a previous incident on March 17, Yusuf Ahmed Swaleh, also known as Candy Rain, a suspected drug baron allegedly connected to a multimillion-dollar drug empire inherited from the notorious Akasha brothers, was found dead under mysterious circumstances. His body was discovered abandoned in a thicket in Kilifi County after reportedly being picked up by individuals posing as police officers for interrogation.

The DCI’s relentless efforts in combating drug trafficking and illegal drug activities are evident through such operations and arrests. By collaborating with the community and acting on intelligence received, law enforcement agencies continue to make strides in curbing the spread of illicit substances and dismantling drug networks operating within the country.

As investigations progress, the DCI remains committed to pursuing leads and bringing perpetrators to justice. The public’s cooperation and support play a crucial role in the fight against drug-related crimes, and initiatives to enhance security and uphold the rule of law in the region. The successful apprehension of the suspected drug trafficker in Mombasa serves as a testament to the diligence and dedication of the DCI officers in safeguarding communities and combating criminal activities.
