Paul Mackenzie and 94 other individuals are facing charges of terrorism in connection with the deaths of 429 people. The defendants all pleaded not guilty to the charges, which were presented in a magistrates’ court in Malindi, southeastern Kenya.

The leader of the Kenyan cult is accused of encouraging members of his Good News International Church to relocate to Shakahola forest and prepare for the end of the world, a move that resulted in the deaths of hundreds of people.

In addition to the terrorism charges, the individuals are also expected to face charges related to child torture and assault in a separate court hearing.

Mackenzie was taken into custody in April 2013 after bodies were discovered in mass graves in a remote forest, located approximately two hours’ drive from the coastal town of Malindi. Reports from the media indicate that most of the bodies showed signs of starvation, and there were suspicions of assault, particularly involving children.

The self-proclaimed pastor has denied any involvement in the deaths, stating that his church had been closed since 2019. The defense lawyer representing the suspects has requested bail, and the decision on this request has been deferred to another court.

The situation is a tragic one and has raised widespread concern and shock within Kenya and beyond. It is a sobering reminder of the importance of safeguarding vulnerable individuals from manipulation and abuse, and of the need for swift and effective justice in cases of such grave wrongdoing. The legal process will hopefully provide clarity and closure for the families of the victims and ensure that those responsible are held accountable for their actions.
