The government of Kenya is making strides in expanding internet connectivity to rural areas by utilizing existing Kenya Power infrastructure to lay fiber optic cables. Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communication, and the Digital Economy, Eliud Owalo, announced the initiative, which aims to lay over 100,000 kilometers of fiber optic cables as part of the last-mile internet connectivity project across the country.
Speaking at Ajigo and Ndori markets in Bondo and Rarieda sub-counties, Owalo officially launched free public Wi-Fi services. He explained that instead of digging trenches to lay fiber optic cables, the government will leverage the existing Kenya Power lines to simultaneously provide electricity and fiber optic connectivity.
Accompanied by Siaya County Commissioner Susan Waweru, Bondo member of parliament Dr. Gideon Ochanda, former Rarieda MP Nicholas Gumbo, and former police spokesman Charles Owino, Owalo outlined the government’s plans to establish 25,000 Wi-Fi hotspots nationwide and launch 1450 digital hubs in each ward.
In addressing the issue of youth unemployment, Owalo emphasized the importance of setting up digital hubs in every ward. Members of parliament have supported this initiative by allocating three percent of constituency development funds for the establishment of these facilities.
Owalo urged Kenyans to rally behind the Kenya Kwanza government to ensure the successful implementation of projects and programs. He emphasized the government’s commitment, under the leadership of President William Ruto, to improving infrastructure in the broader Nyanza region.
The goal of expanding internet connectivity to rural areas through the use of existing infrastructure demonstrates a proactive approach to bridging the digital divide and promoting economic growth and development.
