Public Service Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria recently engaged with Ugandan Members of Parliament along the Busia border in an effort to foster unity and promote health awareness through sporting activities. The meeting, which took place at the invitation of Busia Governor Paul Otuoma, aimed to flag off three marathon races that would bring together communities living across the border.
During his visit, Kuria emphasized the importance of the race in uniting the residents of Busia and promoting health awareness and general wellness through sports. The marathon, divided into 5km, 10km, and 15km segments leading to Uganda, served as a symbol of the close ties being nurtured between the neighboring countries.
Accompanying Kuria were other prominent leaders including MSME Principal Secretary Susan Mangeni and Teso South MP Mary Emase. The event was also attended by five Ugandan Members of Parliament and Members of the Busia County Assembly (MCAs).
In his address, Kuria expressed gratitude to Ugandan President for supporting former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s candidature at the Africa Union Commission. He further highlighted the need to strengthen trade agreements between Kenya and Uganda and reaffirmed the spirit of the East African Community.
The Busia Border Marathon, an annual event in the border county, had been on a hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic but made a comeback in April 2023. The event coordinator emphasized the various health benefits associated with the race, including blood donation, cancer screening, and diabetes and pressure testing.
This year’s marathon coincides with a recent agreement between Kenya and Uganda allowing the latter to continue importing oil through the Port of Mombasa. This agreement came after Uganda sought oil importation deals with other neighboring countries to address concerns over expensive prices and unfair trade practices by oil cartels in Kenya.
The marathon provides a platform for the residents of Busia to actively participate in promoting health and wellness while engaging in friendly competition. Awards are presented to winners in various categories for both men and women in the 10 and 15-kilometer races.
Through events like the Busia Border Marathon and engagements with neighboring countries, Kenya is actively working towards enhancing unity, cooperation, and economic partnerships within the East African region. With a focus on promoting health and wellness through sports, initiatives like these contribute to building stronger ties and fostering a sense of community across borders.
