Public Service Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has put forward a proposal to absorb all National Youth Service (NYS) graduates into Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions. This move is aimed at equipping the graduates with the necessary skills required in the marketplace.
During the admission of NYS Recruits from all 1,400 wards across the country, Kuria mentioned that he is in talks with the Council of Governors to make this proposal mandatory. He emphasized that by enrolling in TVET institutions, the graduates would not only benefit from additional courses but also be prepared for job opportunities secured abroad by President William Ruto.
President Ruto had directed that Kenyan individuals seeking jobs overseas must undergo training before being deployed. Kuria highlighted the importance of ensuring that the graduates who completed the recruitment program were the ones selected. Over 8,000 graduates have already been chosen, with a target of reaching 15,000 recruits at Gilgil and Naivasha by Monday.
The CS also stressed the need to ensure that graduates are selected from every ward in the country in a fair and transparent process. He mentioned President Ruto’s commitment to absorb 80% of these graduates into various sectors such as the Kenya Defence Forces, National Police Service, Kenya Forest Service, and Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS). Kuria emphasized the importance of maintaining integrity in these sectors by selecting individuals who have gone through the proper recruitment process.
To eliminate the issue of ghost workers, the government has implemented biometrics for registering NYS recruits from all wards. Kuria lauded the use of biometrics in the registration process as a way to combat malpractice and ensure a transparent onboarding process for newly recruited NYS officers.
Looking ahead, Kuria plans to extend this initiative to other sectors to ensure fairness and transparency in the recruitment process. He is committed to implementing systems that promote integrity and accountability across various government institutions.
Overall, Kuria’s proposal to absorb NYS graduates into TVET institutions is a step towards equipping young individuals with skills that will enable them to thrive in the job market. By focusing on training and education, the government aims to prepare the youth for both local and international job opportunities, contributing to the development of a skilled workforce in Kenya.
