Chaos erupted at a fundraising event held at a school in Kigumo, Murang’a County, as supporters of Maragua MP Mary Wamaua clashed with those of Woman Representative Betty Maina. The event, which was attended by three cabinet secretaries including Aisha Jumwa of Gender, was intended to be a noble initiative to raise funds to support women. However, things took a drastic turn when Betty Maina and her husband Erick Wamumbe, who is also the MP for Mathira, arrived and spoke at the event.
Videos circulating on social media platforms showed the chaos breaking out after Wamaua attempted to interrupt Wamumbe’s speech, leading to a heated exchange of words between the two lawmakers. Supporters of the two leaders quickly became involved in a physical altercation, turning the otherwise peaceful event into a scene of mayhem.
The event, which was organized by nominated senator Veronicah Maina, was expected to be graced by several cabinet secretaries, including Simon Chelugui of Cooperatives and MSMEs, Alice Wahome of Lands, and Aisha Jumwa. However, the disruption caused by the clash between the supporters of Wamaua and Maina led to the abrupt end of the fundraiser, leaving many in attendance disappointed by their leaders’ behavior.
This incident is part of a concerning trend where political events are being marred by rowdy crowds and disruptions. A similar incident occurred during a Presidential rally in Bomet, where a faction of youth heckled Bomet Governor Hillary Barchok, forcing President William Ruto to intervene and restore order to allow the governor to continue his address.
The chaos at the fundraiser in Kigumo highlights the need for political leaders and their supporters to conduct themselves in a more respectful and orderly manner during public events. The disruption not only reflects poorly on the individuals involved but also detracts from the intended purpose of the event, which was to raise funds to support women in the community.
As the dust settled and order was eventually restored, it serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining civility and decorum in public gatherings, especially those aimed at benefiting the community. Moving forward, it is crucial for all stakeholders to prioritize dialogue, cooperation, and peaceful coexistence to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future.
