Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with President William Ruto on Wednesday, March 13 to discuss the escalating chaos in Haiti following the resignation of Prime Minister Ariel Henry. The two leaders emphasized the need for multinational support to bring an end to the chaos in the war-torn country. They commended the political agreement reached between the Caribbean coalition and other stakeholders.

In a show of support, Prime Minister Trudeau pledged Ksh8.2 billion ($80.5 million) from Canada to assist the Kenya-led mission in dealing with the escalating chaos and gang takeover in Haiti. This financial contribution is part of Canada’s ongoing efforts to support Caribbean Community (CARICOM) members as they prepare to participate in the mission.

Additionally, Trudeau highlighted the importance of other international partners providing essential support, including deploying soldiers to maintain peace and protect the people of Haiti. This commitment from Canada came shortly after the United States announced an extra Ksh14 billion funding for all soldiers going to Haiti to aid in the deployment of the multinational force.

Despite challenges such as court rulings and the resignation of the Haitian Prime Minister, President Ruto and Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindik reaffirmed their commitment to the mission. Ruto confirmed that the deployment of 1,000 police officers to Haiti was progressing, and in a conversation with US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, he reiterated Kenya’s dedication to leading the mission.

Ruto assured Blinken that Kenya would take charge of the UN Security Support Mission in Haiti to restore peace and security as soon as the Presidential Council is established through an agreed-upon process. Meanwhile, the locals in Haiti remain hopeful that the mission involving four countries will continue despite the increasing chaos in their country.

The deployment of international forces to Haiti represents a collective effort to address the ongoing crisis and bring much-needed stability to the region. With financial support from countries like Canada and the United States, along with the commitment of nations like Kenya to lead the mission, there is optimism that progress can be made towards restoring peace and security in Haiti.

Through collaborative efforts and a unified approach, the international community aims to support the people of Haiti in overcoming the challenges they face and working towards a more stable and prosperous future. As the mission unfolds, it is crucial for all parties involved to remain committed to the goal of bringing lasting peace and security to Haiti.
