Former Cabinet Secretary (CS) for Sports, Rachid Echesa, has reportedly fallen ill while in police custody, following his arrest. The incident occurred a day after his arrest, with Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale revealing that Echesa became sick during police questioning and has not yet received medical attention.
Senator Khalwale took it upon himself to advocate for Echesa’s release in order to take him to the hospital. As the Kakamega Senator and Government Majority whip, Khalwale emphasized his role in requesting the National Government to release Echesa to him. He assured authorities that if needed, Echesa could be brought back as he poses no flight risk and serves at the pleasure of the President.
Expressing concern for Echesa’s well-being, Khalwale warned the Inspector General against holding a sick individual in custody, citing the right to life as enshrined in the Kenyan Constitution. He highlighted the importance of upholding this constitutional right for all Kenyans, including Echesa.
Despite his efforts at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters and later at the Muthaiga Police Station, Khalwale was unsuccessful in securing Echesa’s release for medical treatment. The former CS’s health condition has not been disclosed, leaving many questions unanswered regarding his current state and potential release for treatment.
Echesa’s arrest stemmed from allegations of involvement in an extortion ring targeting Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa. The former CS was apprehended at his residence and taken in for questioning at the Muthaiga Police Station. However, Echesa’s lawyer, Danstan Omari, raised concerns about the lack of specifics surrounding the allegations and the absence of a formal complainant. Omari pointed out that Echesa had initially filed a complaint, raising doubts about the circumstances of his arrest.
The situation surrounding Echesa’s health and legal proceedings has raised eyebrows and sparked debates regarding due process and the protection of individuals’ rights under the law. As the story unfolds, there is a growing concern for Echesa’s well-being and the need for transparency in the handling of his case.
In conclusion, the unfolding events surrounding Rachid Echesa’s arrest, illness in custody, and legal proceedings highlight the complexities and challenges within the Kenyan justice system. The need for clarity, fairness, and adherence to legal procedures is essential to ensure that justice is served for all parties involved. As the situation evolves, it is crucial to monitor developments and uphold the principles of justice and human rights in dealing with such cases.
