The Azimio La Umoja coalition has selected former Attorney General Amos Wako to lead a three-person team that will represent them in the 2022 presidential election audit. Joining Wako are former nominated senator Judith Pareno and forensic investigator Julius Njiriani. This decision was made just three days after the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) submitted their report to President William Ruto and opposition leader Raila Odinga.
The names of the three representatives were officially submitted to the National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula on Monday, March 11 by the Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi. Wandayi expressed, “I have today written to the Speaker conveying the names of the three persons who will be our members in the panel. These three persons will be led by Hon. Wako; they will join their three counterparts from the Kenya Kwanza side.” On the other hand, Kenya Kwanza, President Ruto’s coalition, has yet to disclose the names of their nominees for the Panel.
The NADCO report proposed the formation of a panel consisting of experienced experts tasked with evaluating the electoral procedures of 2022. This move not only seeks to review past elections but also aims to establish a robust mechanism for assessing future electoral processes. The panel is expected to be operational within 21 days following the adoption of the NADCO report.
The National Assembly endorsed the findings of the NADCO report in February after it was initially presented to the House on December 7, 2023, by Kimani Ichung’wah, the Leader of the Majority Party and Co-Chairperson of NADCO. In response to the report, nine bills have already been introduced in Parliament to facilitate its implementation.
Recently, Raila Odinga expressed concerns about perceived threats from certain quarters within and outside Parliament that could impede the progress of the National Dialogue Committee report. However, Azimio Summit, the coalition’s decision-making body, released a strong statement accusing elements associated with Kenya Kwanza of attempting to undermine the report’s integrity. The statement warned that any acts of manipulation or subversion will face severe consequences.
The coalition’s firm stance underscores the significance of preserving the integrity of the National Dialogue Committee’s findings and highlights their dedication to upholding democratic processes in Kenya. The summit meeting of the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition leaders on Tuesday, March 5, 2024, further emphasized their commitment to promoting transparency and accountability in the electoral process.
