The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) has taken action against Kenyan athlete Norbert Kigen for the use of a banned substance, specifically testosterone. This decision was made based on the evidence presented, and Kigen’s suspension came into effect on February 27th, with a formal notice of allegation already issued.

In addition to Kigen, another Kenyan athlete, Agnes Mueni Mutua, has also been suspended for the same reasons, with a notice of allegation also issued against her. These suspensions are in line with AIU regulations and will prevent the athletes from participating in any athletics competition until a final decision is reached on the allegations.

A Provisional Suspension is a temporary ban imposed on an athlete or individual involved in athletics pending a final decision after a hearing conducted under the World Athletics Anti-Doping Rules or the Integrity Code of Conduct, as explained by AIU.

Apart from Kigen and Mutua, several other Kenyan athletes have also faced provisional suspensions in the past year for various reasons. These athletes include Caroline Chepkoech Kipkirui (Whereabouts Failure), Jackline Wambui (use of a prohibited substance), Sarah Chepchirchir (use of a prohibited substance), and Beatrice Toroitich (use of a prohibited substance), among others.

AIU has identified Salina Jebet, Purity Komen, Rodgers Kwemoi, Rhonex Kipruto, Nicholas Mboroto Kosimbei, Ibrahim Mukunga Wachira, Purity Changwony, and Lawrence Cherono as facing similar suspensions. The stage and date of suspension issuance vary for each athlete, with some already receiving notices of allegations while others have cases referred to higher authorities for further investigation.

The reasons for these suspensions have been clarified by AIU, with mandatory Provisional Suspensions being imposed under the World Athletics Anti-Doping Rules following an adverse analytical finding for any non-specified substance on the Prohibited List.

Notably, Sarah Chipchirchir is facing her second ban over doping, having previously been banned in 2019. Similarly, marathoner Michael Njenga was previously banned for 8 years after testing positive for a prohibited substance.

Despite these hurdles, Kenyan athletes continued to shine in the Tokyo Marathon, with Benson Kipruto finishing in first place and setting a personal best time. This performance highlights the talent and determination of Kenyan athletes, even in the face of challenges like doping allegations.

Overall, AIU’s proactive approach to maintaining integrity in athletics through strict anti-doping measures is essential for upholding the sport’s values and ensuring fair competition for all athletes involved.
