On Saturday, March 16, a total of 21 individuals were arrested in Kangundo town, located in Machakos County, during a government crackdown. The operation was led by the Machakos County Health County Executive Committee Member (CECM), Doctor Daniel Yumbia, along with other county officials. The officials raided several businesses that were suspected of operating illegally in the area.

During the crackdown, counterfeit products were confiscated, and a number of businesses were shut down for lacking the necessary licenses and legal permits to operate. Dr. Yumbia emphasized the importance of businesses complying with the regulations and obtaining the required permits to operate. The operations that were closed down included eateries, butcheries, lavatories, and chemists. Dr. Yumbia stated that the purpose of the operation was to ensure that businesses in the area were operating in accordance with the law.

The crackdown was prompted by reports of public medicine from Machakos County hospitals being sold to private hospitals due to a shortage of medicine in major hospitals. Dr. Yumbia expressed concern over the alleged sabotage and disagreements within the Biomedical Engineers department and assured that action would be taken to address the issues. Additionally, it was discovered that some employees were prescribing medicine and directing people to purchase them from public pharmacies, which is against the regulations.

In a related incident, in Nairobi County, two managers were arrested on February 27 after county officials raided a company as part of an ongoing crackdown within the city. The Nairobi City County Environmental Monitoring Compliance and Enforcement team targeted a paint manufacturing company that was reportedly not complying with safety regulations. The managers of the company were apprehended to address the allegations, and investigations were initiated into the company’s operations. The factory was identified as one of the top suppliers of paint and other surface materials in the country.

These incidents highlight the importance of businesses adhering to the regulations and obtaining the necessary licenses and permits to operate legally. Government crackdowns are essential to ensure compliance with laws and regulations, as well as to safeguard public health and safety. Authorities continue to monitor businesses and take necessary action against those found to be operating illegally or violating regulations.
