Kampala’s garbage pile could be goldmine for youth, experts say

Kampala generates between 2,000 and 2,500 tonnes of solid waste every day, but experts say the garbage choking streets, markets and disposal sites could become a source of jobs and income if youth are supported to turn it into useful products.

Mr Kenneth Tumusiime, managing director of Plawaste Consult Limited, said much of the waste is organic material brought into the city with agricultural produce from rural areas, depriving farmers of materials that could be returned to gardens as fertiliser.
