The Kabaka (king of Buganda) Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II has entrusted the Nnaalinya Lubuga (princess royal), Dr. Agnes Nabaloga, to kick off the 2024 birthday run at Mengo Palace tomorrow. This decision was made as the monarch, accompanied by Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga, departed for Europe on March 21 to meet with his medical team. Unfortunately, he could not return in time for the birthday run, which aims to raise funds and awareness in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

Katikkiro Mayiga shared that the Kabaka is expected to return home once his medical consultations are complete. Despite his absence, the Kabaka was pleased to know that prominent figures such as President Museveni, the Speaker of Parliament, religious leaders, and opposition leaders will participate in the campaign. Over 100,000 Kabaka people are anticipated to join the run, which is tailored to combat the spread of the virus with routes spanning 5, 10, and 21 kilometers.

During a meeting with Kedi Foundation Uganda at Bulange Mengo, Katikkiro Mayiga confirmed the Kabaka’s directive to have Nnaalinya Lubuga flag off the participants in his absence. The Kabaka remains optimistic that the kingdom’s mission of eradicating HIV/AIDS is achievable if all Ugandans heed the advice of medical professionals and actively engage in initiatives like the birthday run.

Mr. Steven Kedi, the Executive Director of Kedi Foundation, emphasized the importance of leaders joining the cause to support the Buganda Kingdom in the battle against HIV. Kedi Foundation donated over Shs76.5 million towards the cause and purchased kits worth Shs4 million. The Kabaka, who is marking his 69th birthday on April 13, has reigned for close to 31 years, making this event significant in his honor.

As the fight against HIV/AIDS continues, it is crucial for all Ugandans to take responsibility for their health and well-being. Engaging the youth in this endeavor is essential, and now is the opportune time to involve them in the battle against HIV. The collective effort of individuals, organizations, and leaders is essential in achieving the goal of a HIV-free society. Through collaborative initiatives like the birthday run, awareness and funds can be raised to make significant strides in combating the spread of HIV/AIDS within the Buganda Kingdom and beyond.
