John Onyango, the director of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (CRIB), has been appointed as the new deputy boss of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) following the retirement of Nicholas Ireri Kamwende. In his new role, Onyango will work alongside DCI boss, Mohamed Amin, in the pursuit of tackling crime in the country.
The handover ceremony took place at Mazingira Building within DCI Headquarters, where Onyango’s new role of administrative and coordination of various operations across the country was announced. Prior to his appointment, Onyango had represented DCI boss Amin in various functions, including presiding over the ceremony of a basic drug investigation course in Nairobi and the official opening of the Operational Intelligence Analysis course at the National Criminal Investigations Academy.
Before heading CRIB, Onyango served as the former Nyanza Region DCI boss before being moved to the Headquarters in 2022. The changes were made by Mr. Amin after he was appointed as the head of snoopers nationally by President William Ruto. In his previous role, Onyango was responsible for collecting crime data from various places across the country and studying them.
Last week, the DCI boss also made changes within the service, including moving the heads of detectives within Lang’ata, Starehe, and Kasarani Sub-Counties. These changes reflect the ongoing efforts to strengthen and restructure the leadership within the Directorate of Criminal Investigations.
Onyango’s appointment as the deputy boss of DCI underscores the significant role he has played within the organization, including leading and presiding over important training courses and representing the DCI boss at various functions. As he takes on his new responsibilities, he will continue to contribute to the efforts to combat crime and ensure the safety and security of the country. His extensive experience and expertise in the field of criminal investigations make him a valuable asset to the leadership team at DCI.
