The Jinja road police commander has been suspended following allegations of domestic violence that led to the shooting of his ex-wife two weeks ago. The ex-wife of Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Julius Ahimbisibwe sustained injuries in the incident.
In a message from the police director of Human Resource Administration, Brig Jesse Kamunanwire announced the suspension of SSP Julius Ahimbisibwe pending investigations. Superintendent of Police (SP) Patrick Opio has been appointed as the new commander of Jinja Road Police Station, replacing SSP Ahimbisibwe. SP Opio previously served as the DPC for Kagadi District, while SP Hussein Mugalura, who recently completed an intermediate course, has been appointed as the new Kagadi District Police Commander.
Efforts to obtain a comment from the police spokesperson regarding the suspension were unsuccessful, as the police do not typically discuss internal matters. Sources indicate that the Professional Standards Unit personnel have been trying to speak with SSP Ahimbisibwe since the shooting, but have been unable to locate him at his home on Masaka Road. This incident is just one of many involving senior police officers misusing firearms, a troubling trend in the country.
Another recent incident involved Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Moses Acaye, the Officer-in-charge of Alebtong District. ASP Acaye is alleged to have shot and killed a civilian whom he accused of participating in a mob attack that resulted in the death of his relative in Adjumani District. ASP Acaye is currently on the run.
These incidents highlight the challenges within the police force and the need for accountability and transparency. The suspension of SSP Julius Ahimbisibwe and the ongoing investigations serve as a reminder that no one is above the law, including those in positions of authority. It is crucial for the police force to address internal issues promptly and to hold officers accountable for their actions to maintain public trust and confidence in the institution.
As the new commanders take on their roles in Jinja Road and Kagadi District, it is hoped that they will lead by example and uphold the values of professionalism and integrity in their work. It is essential for the police to prioritize the safety and well-being of all individuals, both within the force and in the communities they serve.
