Former NBA champion Jeremy Lin has been handed a five-game suspension and a $5,000 fine for violating anti-doping rules related to a blood treatment for his injury, according to the Taiwan P. League+. The 35-year-old guard, who gained international stardom during his time with the New York Knicks in 2012, leading to the phenomenon known as “Linsanity”, won an NBA championship with the Toronto Raptors in 2019. This incident occurred during his time playing for the New Taipei Kings in Taiwan’s P. League+.
The treatment in question was a type of blood irradiation therapy, which is prohibited under the rules set by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). The league confirmed that the treatment was arranged by the team and did not involve the use of any banned substances. However, it was found to be in violation of WADA regulations.
In response to the violation, Lin’s team issued an apology, stating that the treatment was not intended to enhance performance but rather to aid in his injury recovery. The New Taipei Kings also claimed that they were unaware the treatment was not allowed under WADA rules, as it is deemed legal by Taiwan’s Ministry of Health and Welfare.
Jeremy Lin, a Harvard graduate, began his NBA career in 2010 with the Golden State Warriors before moving on to play for various other teams including the aforementioned New York Knicks, Toronto Raptors, Houston Rockets, LA Lakers, and Charlotte Hornets.
