A group of Catholic nuns has made headlines by reopening a bar in a historic sanctuary in northern Spain. The nuns, belonging to the Pilgrims of the Eucharist order, have taken over the operations of the bar in the Sanctuary of Estibaliz near the city of Vitoria. This move comes after the previous owners, a group of Benedictine monks, handed over the bar to the nuns as they left due to declining numbers and old age.

The bar, formerly known as the “Pater” bar, has been renamed Amaren Etxea, which means House of the Mother in Basque, one of the oldest European languages. The nuns, most of whom are Colombian, see the bar as an opportunity to connect with visitors to the 11th-century Romanesque site and spread their message of faith in a unique way. Sister Guadalupe, a Miami-born nun, emphasized that it is not a sin to enjoy a beer and that the bar serves as an open door for them to evangelize.

During the first weekend after the bar reopened, which coincided with the beginning of Holy Week, the nuns donned bartender aprons over their traditional habits as customers lined up to place their orders. Visitors like Maria Elena Saez expressed their admiration for the nuns, noting the joy and peace they exude while serving drinks. Saez mentioned that she plans to become a regular at the bar due to the positive atmosphere created by the nuns.

The decision to reopen a bar in a religious sanctuary may seem unconventional to some, but the nuns view it as a way to engage with the community and provide a welcoming space for people from all walks of life. By taking on this venture, the nuns hope to break down stereotypes and show that faith and enjoyment can coexist harmoniously.

The presence of the nuns behind the bar has sparked curiosity and intrigue among visitors, who may not have encountered such a setup before. The blending of ancient traditions with modern practices creates a unique appeal that sets the bar apart from conventional establishments. Through their actions, the nuns aim to challenge perceptions and create meaningful connections with those who frequent the sanctuary.

Overall, the reopening of the bar by the Catholic nuns at the Sanctuary of Estibaliz signifies a new chapter in the history of the site. By embracing this opportunity to connect with visitors through hospitality and conversation, the nuns demonstrate their unwavering commitment to spreading the message of God in innovative and unexpected ways. As they continue to serve pints of beer and engage with patrons, the nuns hope to foster a sense of community and inclusion within the ancient walls of the sanctuary.
