Davido’s logistics manager, Israel Afeare, who is popularly known as Israel DMW, has stepped up to defend the singer against those who are poking fun at him following his disappointing performance at the 66th Grammys.
It is no secret that Davido did not win any of the three awards he was nominated for at the recent Grammy Awards. He lost the Best Global Music Performance to ‘Pashto’ by Bela Fleck, Edgar Meyer, and Zakir Hussain, as well as the Best Global Music Album award to Shakti’s ‘This Moment.’ Additionally, 22-year-old South African singer, Tyla, won the inaugural Best African Music Performance award, beating Davido and other Nigerian nominees.
While the Nigerian artistes’ poor outing at the Grammys attracted criticism from music fans and critics online, with many specifically targeting Davido, Israel DMW has been quick to remind those who are mocking the singer that the Grammy Awards are not always a true reflection of merit.
Israel DMW suggested that Davido was used by the Grammy organizers for publicity, and he cautioned those belittling the artist to consider their own lives before making such mockery. In an Instagram story post, he wrote: “You’re completely mocking yourself, if you think you’re mocking my oga [Davido], in an already well-programmed event, where oga’s name had to even been used as publicity. Look at your life in the next 20 years, if you’ will be better than oga, in any way. Look at the life of some past awardees, if they ever merited it.”
While it is undeniable that the Grammy Awards are a significant achievement in the music industry, Israel DMW’s comments highlight the fact that the awards are not always an accurate measure of an artist’s talent or impact. The music industry is highly competitive, and sometimes the outcome of award shows like the Grammys can be influenced by factors other than pure merit.
It is important to remember that while winning a Grammy is undoubtedly a prestigious accomplishment, there are countless talented musicians who have never received the recognition they deserve from award shows. The value of an artist’s work should not be solely determined by the accolades they receive, as there are many factors at play in these events.
In conclusion, Israel DMW’s defense of Davido serves as a reminder that success in the music industry should not be solely measured by awards and accolades. While it is natural for artists to aspire to receive prestigious honors like the Grammy Awards, it is essential to recognize that there are many other ways to gauge an artist’s impact and success. Ultimately, the true worth of an artist lies in their artistry, creativity, and the impact they have on their audience, and these qualities can never be fully captured by any award or accolade.
