In Cameroon and several other countries in Africa, SpaceX has announced that it must suspend its services while waiting for the necessary authorizations.
The telecommunications regulatory authorities in several African countries including Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Guinea, and the DRC have requested that Starlink suspend its Internet services in their respective countries. The operator plans to execute this starting on April 30th. “If you are using your Starlink kit in an area other than the zones designated as ‘Available’ on the availability map, we remind you that this violates the Starlink service terms. As a result, your service will be cut off on April 30, 2024, and you will not be able to access the internet except to update your Starlink account information. This restriction does not apply in the zones designated as ‘Available’ on the Starlink availability map,” emphasized Starlink.
“We are working as quickly as possible to obtain the necessary regulatory approvals from local governments around the world to be authorized to offer Starlink services in as many locations as possible.”
Reminder
In Cameroon, Minette Libom LI Likeng, Minister of Posts and Telecommunications, had asked SpaceX, which deploys Starlink, to block Cameroonian users for the time being because it is illegal, due to lack of authorization. This happened on April 4, 2024, in Yaoundé, during the launch of the Industry Maker ACADEMY (IMA24) program by Digital Transformation Alliance and InnoTechLab.
On March 19, the telecommunications regulatory authority in Côte d’Ivoire (ARTCI) issued a statement reminding users of telecom services in the country that Starlink is not authorized to market its Internet services in the country. On March 20, in Mali, a statement from the Council of Ministers banned Starlink services for the same reasons. Thus, users of Starlink who are already accustomed to high-speed internet will have to wait for official installation.
