Security measures will be significantly increased at the upcoming Champions League match in Paris between Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona following a threat from the Islamic State group, as announced by France’s interior minister, Gerald Darmanin. The threat was not limited to just PSG’s match but extended to all quarter-final matches taking place on Tuesday and Wednesday.
According to Darmanin, the Islamic State group publicly expressed a clear threat towards the matches. In response, the police have ramped up security measures significantly to ensure the safety of all attendees. A source close to the situation revealed that the threat was made through one of the communication channels of the Islamic State, targeting the Champions League quarter-finals in general, not specifically in France.
The matches scheduled for Tuesday include Arsenal facing Bayern Munich in London and Real Madrid hosting Manchester City, the reigning European champions. On Wednesday, Atletico Madrid will take on Borussia Dortmund in the Spanish capital. Despite the threat, UEFA confirmed that all matches will proceed as planned with appropriate security measures in place.
UEFA issued a statement acknowledging the alleged terrorist threats and mentioned that they are closely coordinating with the authorities at the respective venues to ensure the safety and security of everyone involved. PSG coach Luis Enrique expressed his concern during the pre-match news conference, stating that it is natural to be worried about terrorist threats and hoping that they can be controlled and turn out to be just threats without any actual incidents.
In light of the increased security measures and the vigilant efforts of the authorities, fans and players alike can be reassured that every precaution is being taken to prevent any potential threats from being realized. It is crucial for everyone involved to remain vigilant and cooperate with the security personnel to ensure a safe and secure environment for the Champions League matches. Let us all hope for a successful and incident-free sporting event despite the challenges posed by external threats.
