Organizers of the 120th edition of the Lagos International Polo Tournament have promised fans an exciting event featuring top players from around the world. The tournament, known as the 2024 NPA/ GTCO Lagos International Polo Tournament, will see a record 39 teams competing for top honors in different categories of the game.
The teams are fully equipped with foreign professionals and high-quality Argentine horses. They will be vying for victory in four major cups – The Open Cup, The Majekodunmi Cup, The Lagos Low Cup, and the Silver Cup. This year’s event will also be the first time in the tournament’s history that it will be decided over four weeks, with five equally-matched teams competing for the Open Cup from January 28 to January 28.
Bode Makanjuola, one of the organizers, expressed his excitement for this year’s tournament, emphasizing that the club has made special preparations to ensure the 120th edition stands out. Muyiwa Oni, the Polo Captain, explained that the highly-anticipated Majekodunmi Cup will take prominence from January 30 to February 4, featuring four teams from Lagos and Abuja. The following week will see 16 teams from major polo centers across the country taking part in the Low Cup from February 6 to 11, while the final week will feature 14 equally-matched low-goal teams competing for the Silver Cup from February 13 to 18.
Tournament Manager Olumayowa Ogunnusi thanked the main sponsor, GTCO, as well as other sponsors for their support over the years. He promised to deliver great value for the sponsors, participating players, and attendees. In addition to the main cups being contested, there will be subsidiary prizes including the Oba of Lagos Cup, Adedapo Ojora Memorial Cup, Sani Dangote Memorial Cup, Italian Ambassador’s Cup, and the Independence Cup, among others.
Representatives of the main sponsor, GTCO, highlighted their strong belief in the role of sports in developing and uniting society, stating that their sponsorship of the tournament demonstrates their commitment to this belief. They expressed their excitement for the 2024 NPA Lagos International Polo Tournament, which has become one of the most anticipated social and sporting events.
