Authorities in Iganga District have recovered Shs55 million allegedly extorted from Parish Development Model (PDM) beneficiaries by parish chiefs and other local leaders, officials said.
Iganga Resident District Commissioner Eric Sewandagi said five parish chiefs and several SACCO leaders had been arrested for allegedly demanding money from residents in exchange for promises to help them access PDM funds.
“All the suspects are out on police bond and are expected to appear in court to answer charges of sabotaging government programmes,” Sewandagi said.
