During a meeting of the East African regional bloc IGAD in Uganda, Djibouti’s president Ismail Omar Guelleh emphasized the need for bold leadership in mediating conflicts in Sudan and the surrounding region. He spoke of the urgency of the situation, referencing the devastating conflict in Sudan and the recent tensions between Ethiopia and Somalia. Guelleh stressed the necessity for bold leadership, unwavering commitments, and a shared vision that transcends borders and ideologies to address these challenges.

The leaders at the meeting issued a communique urging the parties involved in Sudan’s conflict to engage in constructive dialogue and calling for a ceasefire. The eight-member bloc, along with Saudi Arabia and the United States, has been involved in mediation efforts to end the conflict, although rounds of indirect talks facilitated by these parties in early November were unsuccessful. The two military leaders involved in the conflict have not met in person since the war broke out.

In response to an invitation extended to paramilitary leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo to attend the summit, the Sudanese government suspended ties with the bloc on Tuesday. The Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs accused IGAD of violating Sudan’s sovereignty and setting a dangerous precedent.

Guelleh’s statements emphasize the importance of bold and decisive leadership in resolving conflicts in the region. The communique issued at the meeting reflects the ongoing efforts to bring about a peaceful resolution in Sudan, despite the challenges and setbacks that have arisen. The suspension of ties with Sudan highlights the complexities and sensitivities involved in mediating conflicts, and the need for careful and respectful diplomacy in working towards resolution.
