The Uasin Gishu County Assembly has undergone changes in its list of nominated members following a High Court decision to revoke the nomination of nine MCAs from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA). The Independent Electoral Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has, as a result, released a fresh list of nominated members, with only three of the previously nominated MCAs making it to the new list. The affected MCAs are James Wachira, Belinda Chebichi, David Waiganjo, Rhodah Cheruiyot, Nancy Kiboi, Hassan Chepkoech, Sarah Abdi, Migraine Chebet, and Juliet Chelimo.
The new list complies with a High Court ruling that directed for the gazettement of a new list within 14 days. Reacting to the news, the nine former MCAs have vowed to appeal the High Court judgment, stating that their defense was not adequately considered in the ruling. They expressed regret that the court ruling had halted the work they were doing for the people of Uasin Gishu County and stated their intention to pursue justice through an appeal.
The affected MCAs faced challenges with their nominations, with a Magistrate Court nullifying their nomination on the grounds that the list had been gazetted illegally after being rejected by the Political Parties Tribunal. Despite appealing the ruling at an election petition court, the decision was upheld, with the court stating that UDA did not follow the law when nominating the MCAs. The affected former MCAs now have the option to appeal to the Court of Appeal and subsequently to the Supreme Court.
In a related development, the IEBC has also gazetted the nomination of Esther Kimeli Misoi and revoked the nomination of Lydia Matuli from the Amani National Congress party in the neighboring Nandi County Assembly.
