Nigerian musician Omah Lay recently shared his experience of being detained in a Ugandan prison. Along with fellow artist Tems, he was arrested and charged after performing at a concert in Uganda in violation of COVID-19 regulations. Despite the initial difficulty, Omah Lay now views the ordeal as a pivotal moment in his career.

In an interview with The Beat FM in London, Omah Lay reflected on his time in Ugandan prison, describing it as both challenging and transformative. He explained that the experience ultimately led to important relationships, particularly with Tems and her manager, Muyiwa Awoniyi, who was also detained with them. Omah Lay attributed the bonds formed during their incarceration to propelling him to the next level musically.

Recounting the events that led to their arrest, Omah Lay explained that they had obtained the necessary paperwork to perform in Uganda during the pandemic. However, they were still taken into custody after their performance and spent two days in jail. He described the experience as “horrible” and emphasized that he would not wish it on anyone.

Despite the hardship, Omah Lay also expressed gratitude towards the prison official who intervened on their behalf. He shared that the official, who happened to be a fan of his music, ensured that they were well taken care of during their time in custody, even preventing them from having their hair cut and providing them with a decent place to stay in jail.

Overall, while the situation in Uganda was undoubtedly challenging, Omah Lay has chosen to focus on the positive outcomes, including the relationships that were strengthened as a result. He now sees the experience as pivotal in shaping his career and is grateful for the opportunities that have arisen from it.
