Seyi Awolowo, a former participant in the Big Brother Naija reality show, recently shared his intention to enter the political arena. As the grandson of the late chief Obafemi Awolowo, a prominent Nigerian nationalist and statesman, Seyi discussed the societal expectations placed on him due to his familial background during an interview on Channels TV’s ‘The Morning Brief’.
At 33 years old, Seyi is the 20th grandchild of Awolowo, who passed away at the age of 78 in 1987 in his hometown of Ikenne in Ogun state. Seyi expressed his reluctance to enter politics but acknowledged that the current state of affairs in Nigeria might compel him to do so. He had initially hoped to thrive in the entertainment industry, but his desire for his family to experience Nigeria as he did has prompted him to consider a career in politics.
In the interview, Seyi emphasized his commitment to staying in Nigeria and enabling his family to fully embrace the country. He desires for them to have the opportunity to explore all 36 states, engage with various tribes, and truly experience being a Nigerian without restrictions or the uncertainty of foreign policies. Seyi’s upbringing as an Awolowo descendant also influenced his decision, as he recounted how people have always expected him to emulate his grandfather’s dedication to reading and learning.
His overarching goal in considering a political path is to contribute to positive change in Nigeria and provide a better future for his family within the country. Despite his initial reservations, Seyi’s determination to make a difference and his desire to uphold his family’s legacy has led him to contemplate a potential career in politics. As he continues to navigate his options, Seyi remains focused on serving the people of Nigeria and making a meaningful impact on the nation.
