Speaker of Parliament Ms. Anita Among announced her decision to contest in the 2026 general election after heeding calls from her constituents in Bukedea District, eastern Uganda. Speaking at Apopong Primary School in Kolir, Bukedea District, Ms. Among reiterated her defense against those who had attacked her and the 11th Parliament she presides over, attributing it to her firm stance against homosexuality.
Addressing hundreds of gathered supporters at Apopong Primary School, Ms. Among assured them that she would not back down on her condemnation of homosexuality despite facing opposition. She expressed confidence that those against her would be put to shame, emphasizing her commitment to continue condemning the issue.
Ms. Among emphasized, “I am not going to come down on the issues of homosexuality. I will continue condemning them.” She also addressed the accusations and criticism she faced, particularly regarding social media attacks, stating firmly that she would not be intimidated or pressured into resignation as long as she had the support of her constituents.
Furthermore, the Bukedea Woman MP urged her constituents to pray for the country and its leaders, reaffirming her dedication to serving them as their elected representative. She dismissed calls for her resignation, highlighting the backing she received from her voters and the President who supported her candidacy.
During the event, the NRM Publicity Secretary in Bukedea District endorsed Ms. Among as the sole candidate on the NRM party ticket for the position of Woman MP in the district. Highlighting the President’s endorsement and support, he emphasized Ms. Among’s importance as an asset to the country and urged the community to stand by her.
In response to her opponents, Ms. Among emphasized that she would not seek vengeance and instead relied on prayers and the support of her constituents and the NRM party. She expressed confidence in overcoming any challenges and confronting those who opposed her with the backing of her community.
Ms. Among also participated in the ongoing NRM party registration exercise, registering herself and encouraging her constituents to do the same. Emphasizing the importance of personal engagement in the registration process, she urged everyone to take part and get involved in the political process.
Overall, Ms. Anita Among’s determination to stand for re-election despite facing opposition underscores her commitment to serving her constituents and upholding her principles. With the support of her community and the backing of the ruling party, she remains steadfast in her resolve to continue representing Bukedea District in Parliament.
