The burial of Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka’s brother-in-law saw the spotlight shift to the upcoming 2027 elections and the Azimio la Umoja coalition’s search for a flag bearer. Azimio leader Raila Odinga assured the Kamba community that he was willing to step aside and endorse Mr. Musyoka for the presidency, emphasizing the need for unity and inclusivity within the coalition.

Recognizing Mr. Musyoka’s significant role in his political journey, Mr. Odinga acknowledged that the Wiper party leader rightfully deserved the presidential ticket. However, he urged for patience in the decision-making process, emphasizing the need for each party within the coalition to be given equal consideration and respect.

Speaking at the burial, Mr. Odinga also highlighted the importance of timing in unveiling the coalition’s presidential candidate, warning that rushing the announcement could be counterproductive in the long run. He stressed the need for the member parties to strengthen themselves and not succumb to external pressure in making such a significant decision.

Former Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa opened the debate, reminding Mr. Odinga of the unwavering support Mr. Musyoka and the Kamba community had shown him in past elections. Mr. Odinga clarified his stance, stating that the issue of endorsing Mr. Musyoka would be addressed at the appropriate time, emphasizing the equal partnership and shared leadership within the Azimio coalition.

The Wiper loyalists, however, expressed their frustrations, calling for a clear and early declaration of the coalition’s presidential candidate. They argued that an early announcement would allow the candidate to campaign effectively across the country and present Azimio as a credible alternative government.

The debate surrounding the timing and announcement of the coalition’s flag bearer continued, with Wiper Party leaders and MPs expressing their discontent with the perceived delay in declaring Mr. Musyoka as the presidential candidate. They emphasized the need for a change in strategy and approach to ensure that their leader was not disrespected, and Azimio was fully prepared to take on the ruling party in the 2027 elections.

Amidst the debate, Mr. Musyoka remained focused on his upcoming countrywide campaign tours, steering clear of the unfolding political discourse. His itinerary included visits to Embu, Meru, and the Gusii region as he sought to popularize his presidential bid.

The burial ceremony was attended by various Azimio leaders, including former Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya, George Wajackoya, Kitui Governor Julius Malombe, and Kitui County Assembly Speaker Kevin Kinengo, underscoring the significance and impact of the coalition’s decision in the upcoming elections.
