The Ministry of Education is on a mission to locate and enroll all 48,000 students who received an ‘E’ grade in the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) into Vocational and Training Institutions.
Dr. Belio Kipsang, the Principal Secretary for Basic Education, emphasized the need for all Form Four leavers with low grades to transition to Tertiary and Vocational Training Institutions to pursue craft courses.
In an interview, Dr. Kipsang expressed the Ministry’s commitment to addressing the unique challenges affecting the Coast region and the overall performance of the 2023 KCSE. He highlighted the importance of understanding and addressing cases of low grades, as it constitutes a significant waste of potential and investment in the education sector.
Dr. Kipsang also directed education stakeholders to increase school visitations and classroom observations to support teachers in curriculum delivery and assessment. Additionally, he stressed the need for regular joint engagements and feedback to support and improve teachers through quality assurance and curriculum support officers.
The Education Ministry aims to strengthen quality assurance in collaboration with the Teachers Service Commission to enhance the education sector. Dr. Kipsang assured that the government is dedicated to addressing all challenges facing schools, including infrastructure deficiencies and the lack of laboratories and books.
Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu expressed concern over the high number of candidates scoring low grades and emphasized the need for better coordination among schools, teachers, parents, and students.
The Directorate of Quality Assurance will work with field officers and teachers to investigate and submit a report on the ‘E’ grade cases in each county. The Ministry is determined to ensure that every learner has a viable path to further education and training, despite their initial KCSE results.
