Türkiye’s TURKSOM Military Training School plays a crucial role in enhancing the capabilities of Somalia’s armed forces, according to President Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud. The President addressed the commissioning ceremony of 500 trained soldiers who underwent training at the Turkish military base and defense university in Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia. Praising Türkiye’s support for the African nation’s army, Mohamoud highlighted the significant role played by TURKSOM Military Training School in shaping the future of Somalia’s armed forces.
The Somali Eagle Unit, specially trained by Turkish officers and experts, completed their training at TURKSOM in Somalia and in Türkiye. President Mohamoud emphasized the threat posed by the Al Shabab terrorist organization, stating that the soldiers’ commitment to serving their country, people, religion, and government is a priceless gift.
Established in 2017, TURKSOM has been actively training members of the Somali army and providing support for their operations. In recent developments, Somalia’s parliament passed a bilateral defense and economic collaboration pact with Türkiye, granting Türkiye the authority to protect Somalian waters for a period of 10 years. This agreement also lays the foundation for the establishment of a naval force to secure Somalia’s maritime territory.
In an interview with TRT World, Somalia’s Defense Minister Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur expressed gratitude towards Türkiye for its unwavering support in promoting peace, stability, and prosperity in the region. The close ties between Türkiye and Somalia have been a cornerstone of Türkiye’s foreign policy towards Africa. In 2011, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, then prime minister, made history by becoming the first non-African leader to visit Somalia in nearly two decades. Since then, President Erdogan has visited Somalia multiple times and hosted Somali counterparts in Türkiye on several occasions.
The bond between Türkiye and Somalia is characterized by mutual respect, cooperation, and a shared commitment to fostering peace and security in the region. The collaboration between the two countries in training Somali soldiers and securing Somalia’s maritime borders underscores their dedication to enhancing the capabilities of the Somali armed forces. Through initiatives like TURKSOM Military Training School and bilateral agreements on defense and security, Türkiye continues to play a vital role in supporting Somalia’s military and promoting stability in the region.
The partnership between Türkiye and Somalia serves as a model for enhancing security cooperation and fostering diplomatic relations between nations. As Türkiye continues to invest in training programs and capacity-building efforts for the Somali armed forces, the future of Somalia looks brighter with improved security, stability, and defense capabilities.
