Kevin Adam Kinyanjui Kang’ethe, a 40-year-old man accused of murdering his girlfriend in the United States and then fleeing to Kenya to escape justice, made a daring escape from police custody, sparking a five-day manhunt that raised serious concerns about the security measures in place at the police station. His escape was likened to a scene from a thriller movie, leaving many questioning how an alleged murderer could slip away from a heavily guarded police station.

Kang’ethe’s escape came to a dramatic end when the police, acting on a tip-off, raided a house in Ngong and arrested him. Reportedly, the house belonged to a relative of the fugitive. Nairobi police boss Adamson Bungei confirmed that Kang’ethe was captured at Embulbul in Ngong town. After his capture, he was temporarily detained at Ngong police station before being taken to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters on Kiambu Road, where he spent the night.

During his arrest, police found a brand new mobile phone, a charger, and a set of keys on Kang’ethe. It was revealed that he had been on Interpol’s Red Notice, which is a request to law enforcement worldwide to locate and provisionally arrest a person pending extradition, surrender, or similar legal action. This notice was issued by the US after police officers discovered the remains of his girlfriend in a car parked at Logan International Airport.

Kang’ethe and his girlfriend, 31-year-old Margaret Mbitu, had been living in the US for several years. Mbitu, who was a healthcare aide in Halifax, Massachusetts, was last seen leaving work on October 30. Investigations revealed that she had travelled with Kang’ethe to Lowell, another town in Massachusetts, soon after leaving work, and that he had stabbed her multiple times in the face and neck, before driving her body to the airport and boarding a flight to Nairobi. The police lost track of him until January 30 this year, when he was arrested in a nightclub in the capital.

Kang’ethe’s daring escape and subsequent capture had captivated local and international media, with his dramatic re-arrest making headlines across various platforms. His capture once again highlighted the interconnectedness of law enforcement agencies globally and the importance of international cooperation in capturing fugitives who attempt to evade justice by fleeing to other countries. This case also raised questions about the security protocols and procedures at police stations, particularly when dealing with high-profile and potentially dangerous suspects.

The shocking nature of the escape and the subsequent manhunt had sparked intense public interest, with many following the developments closely as they unfolded. The international dimension of the case, with Kang’ethe’s Red Notice and his alleged crimes in the US, added an extra layer of complexity and intrigue to the story. Ultimately, the successful re-arrest of Kang’ethe provided closure for those who had been following the case and reassured the public about the capabilities of law enforcement agencies in pursuing and capturing fugitives.
