In the world of Kenyan politics, there are often stories of remarkable success that shine a powerful spotlight on the politicians themselves. However, in Bomet, behind the victory of Woman Representative Linet Chepkorir, also known as Toto, stands an unsung hero, Gideon Kiprotich Cheruiyot, a boda boda rider whose steadfast support played a pivotal role in her unexpected triumph.
Toto’s journey began when she declared her intention to vie for the Bomet Woman Representative seat in the 2022 General Elections. In the Rift Valley political landscape dominated by established figures, her youth, humble background, and limited resources made her an unlikely contender. However, amidst the skepticism, 27-year-old Cheruiyot, also a part-time plumber, saw potential in her. Their paths crossed in September 2021 during a fundraiser planning committee meeting, where Cheruiyot noticed Toto’s determination to enter politics despite facing financial constraints and public skepticism. He then volunteered to be her free transport, using his motorcycle fueled by his savings and donations from well-wishers.
For six months, Toto and Cheruiyot traversed Bomet county, defying critics who dismissed her candidacy. Despite facing public attacks, social media trolling, and financial challenges, their collaboration persisted, with Cheruiyot’s belief in her vision and encouragement during tough times playing a crucial role. Toto’s breakthrough came during a UDA meeting at then Deputy President William Ruto’s (now President) residence, where she gained recognition and support, and here, her momentum grew, with people offering vehicles and resources for her campaign. Cheruiyot’s motorcycle, initially the symbol of an underdog’s campaign, became a testament to their resilience after Toto’s victory in the UDA party nominations and subsequently in the August 2022 elections.
In her maiden speech in parliament, Toto acknowledged the contribution made by Cheruiyot in her campaign trail. She publicly thanked him for his dedication and selfless support, acknowledging the role he played in her journey to victory. Unknown to many, Cheruiyot was previously employed as a milk vendor and had enrolled at Sot Technical Institute for a plumbing course while also working as a part-time boda boda rider.
In an interview, Cheruiyot revealed the circumstances of their first encounter and the decision he made to invest his time and resources in Toto’s campaign, without expecting anything in return. He emphasized that their relationship remained strictly professional throughout the entire campaign.
After Toto’s election victory, Cheruiyot sold his motorcycle and bought a new one on loan to finance personal needs, including furthering his education. He expressed confidence that Toto, who recently announced her engagement, will continue to serve the people at the grassroots with the same character, focus, and personal touch, as she will be seeking re-election in the future.
Cheruiyot’s unwavering support and sacrifice for Toto’s political journey serve as a reminder that success in politics often involves individuals from all walks of life coming together to support a common vision. While Toto’s victory may be what captured public attention, it is Cheruiyot’s commitment and dedication that truly exemplifies the spirit of community and grassroots support in Kenyan politics.
