Kenyan Police Officer Dies in US Hotel Room
The sudden and tragic death of Chief Inspector Walter Nyankieya Nyamato, a Kenyan police officer based at the Jogoo House police headquarters, has left his family in Kisii County devastated. Nyamato was found dead in his hotel room in Washington DC, where he was staying as part of an advance security team dispatched to Haiti on a reconnaissance mission.
The Metropolitan Police Department in Washington DC was called in by the hotel management after Nyamato failed to respond to attempts to contact him. His lifeless body was discovered in his room after the door was broken in by police and hotel staff.
The family of the deceased officer expressed their shock and sorrow at the sudden loss. Bernard Ondieki Nyamato, Nyamato’s elder brother, expressed his grief on Facebook, stating, “My heart is bleeding. The Nyamato family is mourning. My little brother Walter Nyankieya Nyamato is no more. Sad to die at your prime years. We had a lot of plans to accomplish this year. God knows what happened. He has the answers. I believe we will meet again.”
Jared Nyamato, another brother of the deceased, expressed disbelief at the news, questioning how Nyamato could have passed away in his sleep without any known medical conditions.
The circumstances surrounding Nyamato’s death are still under investigation. It was reported that Nyamato was part of a group of Kenyan police officers staying at the hotel, having been sent to Haiti to prepare for the planned deployment of a Kenyan peacekeeping force.
The international force, aimed at addressing gang violence in Haiti, had faced legal hurdles in Kenya. The High Court had ruled that it would be unconstitutional to deploy police officers abroad without a “reciprocal arrangement” with the host government. However, President Ruto had expressed optimism regarding the mission, stating that he expected a request from Haiti that would satisfy court demands.
The tragic death of Chief Inspector Walter Nyankieya Nyamato has deeply affected his family and colleagues, leaving them to grapple with the loss of a dedicated and respected officer. As they mourn his passing, they are also seeking answers and clarity regarding the circumstances surrounding his untimely death.
