Police in Gulu City have taken into custody a 37-year-old man, Morgan Rubangakene, who was found in possession of government stores. The arrest took place following a raid by security operatives after a businesswoman reported an attempted robbery in which Rubangakene and others were involved. The raid led to the discovery of a gun, ammunition, and an army jacket in Rubangakene’s possession.

Rubangakene, a resident of Patuda village in Omoro District, allegedly donned an army jacket and together with accomplices who are still at large, visited the home of a victim in Layibi Central, Pece Laroo Division in Gulu City. They demanded Shs20 million from the victim, threatening harm if their demands were not met. The victim, however, did not possess the requested amount of money but was coerced into revealing her cente-mobile money bank statement, indicating the presence of some funds. The robbers then instructed the victim to hand over the money the following day to ensure her safety.

Following the victim’s report to the police, Rubangakene was apprehended, and a search of his residence uncovered incriminating evidence. This included an SMG assault rifle, army uniforms, ammunition, and cash amounting to Shs3 million. The police are now actively pursuing Rubangakene’s two accomplices, whose identities are being withheld to protect the integrity of the ongoing investigations.

Mr. David Ongom Mudong, the Aswa West River Region spokesperson, highlighted the importance of business owners avoiding the exposure and movement of large sums of cash to reduce their vulnerability to criminal activities. He commended the victim for her courage in resisting the robbers’ demands and emphasized the need for vigilance and caution in dealing with such security threats.

The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of cooperation between the public and law enforcement agencies in combating crime and ensuring the safety and security of communities. The swift action taken by the police in apprehending Rubangakene and recovering the stolen items demonstrates their commitment to upholding law and order in Gulu City.

As investigations continue and efforts are made to locate the remaining suspects, it is evident that proactive measures must be taken to prevent and deter criminal activities. The vigilance and cooperation of community members, coupled with the swift response of law enforcement agencies, play a crucial role in maintaining peace and security in the region.

Overall, the incident sheds light on the prevalence of crime and the importance of collective efforts in addressing security challenges. It serves as a call to action for all stakeholders to work together in promoting a safe and secure environment for all residents of Gulu City.
