*The Central Government handles current affairs. The National Assembly is settling in and still developing its Internal Regulations, while waiting for the establishment of its definitive Bureau. In the Senate, all eyes are on the upcoming elections. In the Provinces, Assemblies are setting up and making arrangements for the election, in the coming days, of Governors and Vice-Governors. More than two months after his election, everything is moving slowly. And yet, Félix Tshisekedi says he is eager to get to work, to start meeting the expectations of the Congolese people.

Diplomatic Tour

After Addis Ababa, Félix Tshisekedi traveled to Angola where he was expected for separate discussions with Paul Kagame. Just after that, he was in Belgium where he denounced the Agreement between the European Union and Rwanda.

His agenda included a stop in Brussels, capital of the former colonial power and hub of many European activities, which was crucial. At this same occasion, he called for the cancellation of this ‘stillborn’ Agreement which, in his opinion, is meaningless as none of the minerals at the base of the agreement can be found under Rwandan soil.

The presidential journey continued to Turkey and Doha, Qatar. The presidential diplomatic machine continued tirelessly until the approval, by Russia, of a principle Agreement for military cooperation with Rwanda, which to this day, is causing a stir in political circles and diplomatic offices about the nature and real purpose of this approach.

DRC: Towards a Majority Coalition

He was elected on December 20, 2023. Then, he was inaugurated on January 20, 2024. Félix Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo, armed with his brand-new five-year mandate, reaffirmed during his first special press briefing on February 22, 2024, that the appointment of the Formateur of the new post-electoral government would occur as soon as Mr. Augustin Kabuya, designated Informant, presents him with the report of his mission.

However, after carrying out laborious consultations, the Informant reported back to him and on the same day, the President, Félix Tshisekedi, entrusted him with continuing his mission, while also asking him to extend the consultations to other political and social forces that clearly belong to the Presidential Majority, beyond the already identified Parliamentary Majority. Through this stage, once the connection is made, this ‘Presidential Majority-Parliamentary Majority’ pair would lead to the formation of a Majority Coalition called upon to participate, in one way or another, in the governance of the country and therefore, in the management of the Res Publica.

In essence, the President of the Republic, advocating for political openness in his inauguration speech on January 20, 2024 at the Stade de Martyrs de la Pentecôte, clearly aims to smooth out the rough edges and potentially draw from this emerging Majority Coalition his new teammates whose contributions are eagerly awaited for the success of his six cardinal objectives that form the essential framework of his second term in his presidential seat, for this new political sequence 2023 -2028.
