NCBA Bank’s decision to renew its partnership with the Kenya Golf Union (KGU) and the Junior Golf Foundation (JGF) for the 2024 golfing activities in the country is a positive development. The bank will be providing support to KGU for the 2024 Kenya Amateur Golf Championship (KAGC) series with a contribution of Sh6 million. Additionally, NCBA Bank will be allocating Sh12 million to support the 2024 Junior Golf Series events.

The commitment from NCBA Bank is especially commendable, considering that the Junior Golf Foundation has been actively involved in nurturing young talent since 2020. Noteworthy individuals such as the Kibugu brothers, Mutahi and Njoroge, and Taimur Malik, have benefited from the foundation’s initiatives. The bank’s involvement in the sport ensures sustainable growth, although it relies on the accountability and transparency of both KGU and JGF.

In a setting where many sports federations struggle to secure sponsorship, the financial support from corporates becomes crucial. It is evident that the government alone cannot support all sports in the country. Unlike football, rugby, basketball, and hockey leagues, NCBA Bank’s commitment to golf sponsorship is a positive step towards addressing the sponsorship challenges faced by various sports.

The government’s initiative to offer tax relief as an incentive for corporate sponsorship also bolsters the support for sports. The potential tax exemption for corporates sponsoring sports can significantly benefit the country’s sportsmen and women, especially as efforts are made to diversify and increase the medal count in major championships such as the Olympic Games and Commonwealth Games.

Overall, NCBA Bank’s renewed partnership with KGU and JGF, combined with the potential tax incentives, underscores the value of corporate support in the growth and development of sports in the country.
