The Kenya men’s golf team successfully defended their title at the Victoria Cup, despite tying on points with hosts Uganda at the Uganda Golf Club in Kampala. In a thrilling competition, both teams accumulated a total of 11 points each over the four rounds played. However, due to Kenya being the defending champions, they retained the trophy ahead of the 2025 edition.
During the first round of foursomes, Kenya won three matches against Uganda’s one. In the Four Ball Better Ball second round, Kenya won two matches and halved one with Uganda. The third round, also played in Better Ball Four, saw Uganda emerge victorious, winning three matches and halving one against Kenya’s solitary win. In the fourth round of singles, each side won five matches and lost five to tie on 11-11 points, resulting in Kenya’s retention of the Victoria Cup.
The singles matches saw Joseph Cwinyaai beat Adel Balala 5-4, Ibrahim Bagalana winning 5-3 against Sammy Mulama, Ibrahim Semakula defeating Danny Chelogoi 2-1, and Andrew Sekibeja beating Dennis Maara 1-up. Ugandan Titus Okwong also secured a 2-1 victory against Kenya’s youngster Elvis Muigua. On the Kenyan side, John Lejirmah, Krish Beiju, Josphat Rono, Ebill Omoll, and Michael Karanga secured victories for their team.
The Victoria Cup has been an annual event since 2016, donated by former Boston Marathon champion Moses Tanui, who is the current Kenya Golf Union (KGU) representative in the North Rift region.
In other golf news, the Mombasa Golf Club hosted the first round of the KCB East Africa Golf Tour. A foursome team consisting of Prisca Jebet, Rishi Dodhia, Florence Karimi, and Orpha Wamaitha emerged as the overall winners, returning a combined score of 123 points. The second-place team of club captain James Gitonga, Elijah Ibua, Gabriel Gakuo, and Peter Karanja secured 112 points.
“An amazing golf outing,” said Prisca Jebet. “I cannot wait to compete against top golfers in the country and across the region later this year.”
In the individual section, Willy Sang posted an impressive 40 points to take the overall title in the field of 138 golfers. Former club chairman Peter Kimanga claimed the men’s title, while the ladies’ title went to Orpha Wamaitha. Mattias Lagermo was named the best guest.
