The Saglemi Housing Project, a major housing development in Ghana, is set to receive a boost with the involvement of the private sector. The Technical Working Group overseeing the project has been given a five-week deadline to issue an international expression of interest to attract private partners. This move, directed by Minister of Works and Housing Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, aims to bring in a private partner to complete the project without additional costs to the government.

During a media briefing, Minister Nkrumah highlighted the strategic decision to engage the private sector in order to secure the necessary funds and expertise to complete the Saglemi Housing Project. The Technical Working Group is working towards attracting private investors who can contribute to the estimated US$100 million needed to finish the project. Currently, 1,506 housing units within the project are at varying stages of completion, and the aim is to accelerate the process to address the country’s housing deficit of 1.8 million.

In addition to the Saglemi Housing Project, Minister Nkrumah also visited other housing developments in Ghana, including the 3016 No Affordable Housing Units at Kpone, the National Home Ownership Fund, the National Affordable Housing Project at Pokuase, the Security Services Housing Project at Tesano, and the construction of housing projects at Lartebiokorshie. These visits emphasized the government’s commitment to providing affordable housing solutions to its citizens.

During the visit to Kpone, Minister Nkrumah assured the developers of continuous support and encouraged them to explore innovative financing options to ensure that housing units remain affordable. He emphasized the importance of developing sustainable financing models to overcome the barriers to affordable housing and enable more citizens to own their own homes.

Efforts are also being made to improve security measures at construction sites to prevent theft of materials and equipment, ensuring the smooth progress of the projects. The government is dedicated to completing these housing developments to meet the growing demand for affordable housing in the country.

Overall, the involvement of the private sector in the completion of the Saglemi Housing Project and other housing developments in Ghana is seen as a positive step towards addressing the housing deficit and providing quality housing options for the citizens. Minister Nkrumah’s leadership and vision for the housing sector are aimed at transforming the housing landscape in Ghana and ensuring that all citizens have access to affordable and sustainable housing solutions.
